February has been a rather tough month for the British royal family, with the news that the Queen has Covid being just the tip of the iceberg.
Earlier this month, Queen Elizabeth’s second son, Prince Andrew backtracked on his demand for a trial in the New York case against him. He had been charged with sexually abusing Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, when she was just 17. Despite his constant denial, the Duke of York has now made an out-of-court settlement of an undisclosed amount. It has caused to be a great embarrassment among the British people and received much ridicule from the British tabloids.
Following the Andrew debacle, the Queen’s first son, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla tested positive for Covid. And now the latest news from Buckingham Palace is that the 95-year-old Queen has Covid, too.

All this amid the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! Not quite the way we imagine she wanted to spend the 70th anniversary of her reign.
When a Queen has Covid
According to a report by the BBC, it seems that it could have been Prince Charles who passed on the virus to his mother. They note that Charles met the Queen on 8 February. This was just two days before he tested positive for Covid on 10 February. However, the BBC write that ‘It is understood a number of people have tested positive at Windsor Castle, where the Queen resides.’
While the Queen has Covid, she is clearly trying her best to carry on with business as usual. The Queen’s health has always been a private matter with only essential details ever provided. The latest announcement is no different. The official statement released from Buckingham Palace informs the public that the Queen has Covid, and not too much else. It seems any sense of alarm has been played down. As BBC’s Sean Coughlan writes, ‘the concern about the 95-year-old monarch catching Covid is set against her being well enough to continue working.’

The palace statement notes that the monarch is only experiencing ‘mild cold-like symptoms’ and is expecting to continue with ‘light duties’ from Windsor. ‘She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines,’ the statement added.
Well wishes for the Queen
It was just a few days ago that the Queen was seen receiving Rear Admiral James Macleod as he leaves his position of Defence Services Secretary, and his successor Major General Eldon Millar. While at that stage it had not been known that the Queen has COVID, she did appear a little more frail than usual. Smiling, but with a walking stick in hand, the Queen answered on how she was. As in the video below, the Queen pointed to her left leg saying, ‘Well, as you can see, I can’t move.’

With the medical help of her personal physician, Sir Huw Thomas, we can be sure the Queen is getting the best attention. It is also fairly certain that her majesty has received all her vaccinations against the virus. She received her first jab back in January 2021.
We do hope the monarch a speedy recovery from COVID, and a much better year ahead!
