The Met Gala – honouring the late designer Karl Lagerfeld – taking place next month in May will have one very special guest in attendance. None other than Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette, of course! This 11-year-old Birman has been formally invited to the event, which will honour her late designer owner.
With her own agent and millions of followers, Choupette is no ordinary feline. Born in 2011 in France, Choupette was initially the pet of Baptiste Giabiconi, a French model and singer, who asked Karl Lagerfeld, the legendary fashion designer, to cat-sit for her. Karl and Choupette hit it off immediately, and she ended up staying with him permanently.

Choupette soon became an internet sensation, with her own Instagram account (@choupettesdiary), a Twitter parody account (@ChoupettesDiary), and millions of followers. She has been featured in magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, and has even been the subject of a coffee table book, “Choupette: The Private Life of a High-Flying Fashion Cat“.

Apart from being a social media star, Choupette has also worked as a model for brands like Shu Uemura and Vauxhall Corsa, and has been photographed by some of the world’s most famous photographers, including Karl Lagerfeld himself.

Choupette’s luxurious lifestyle includes her own personal maids and chefs, who take care of her every need, from grooming and feeding to playing and cuddling. In 2019, after Karl Lagerfeld’s death, it was reported that he had left a portion of his estate to Choupette, making her one of the richest pets in the world with a net worth of around $13 million (R234,237,445.00)
Despite her fame and fortune, Choupette is said to be a very affectionate and loving cat who enjoys playing with her toys and cuddling up with her human companions. And now, with an invitation to attend the Met Gala in honour of her father, Choupette is set to strut the red carpet in purrfect style.
