A magical journey
Mbedu will portray Zélie, a courageous young woman in a fantasy African kingdom who embarks on a mission to restore magic to her oppressed people. Teaming up with her older brother Tzain (Tosin Cole) and Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg), Zélie confronts the tyranny of King Saran and his son, Prince Inan (Damson Idris), as they fight to reclaim their heritage and freedom.
According to The Citizen, Mbedu described Zélie’s character as “a headstrong and protective woman with a quick temper. Through the journey, Zélie learns to trust others despite her traumatic past.”
For Mbedu, the role is more than just another career milestone—it’s a dream come true. Sharing her excitement on Instagram, the actress revealed her special connection with Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone novel.
“Back in 2019, the book was gifted to me, quickly becoming one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. I fell in love with it so deeply that I made it a prayer point—boldly asking God to be part of this story as its lead. To see that prayer manifest is absolutely mind-blowing.”
Mbedu also expressed her gratitude for being part of such a talented ensemble cast, adding, “To work with some of the most incredible people in this industry on a story that means so much is humbling. I’m so excited and so grateful.”
A rising star in Hollywood
Mbedu’s global career trajectory continues to soar, with this role solidifying her reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the film industry.
Her previous standout performances include:
