Top Gun Maverick has taken on the title of the fifth highest money-making movie in America of all time and the proof is in the pudding that fans cannot get enough.
Overtaking Marvel’s well know Black Panther, Maverick brought in more than R12 billion at US Box office. The movie is a sequel to its 1986 original hit Top Gun and has proved its shelf life hasn’t expired.
“A true cultural touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience” shared the CEO of Paramount Pictures, Brian Robbins in gushing about the film.
In the sequel Cruise’s character has 30 years of experience as Pete Maverick Mitchell, an aviator icon, making him one of the top instructors. He takes on training a group of Navy graduates for a specialised mission they have never encountered before in a nail-biting plotline.
“As we celebrate this enormous achievement and the film’s massive impact, we want to extend our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, Paramount’s marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime ‘Top Gun’ fans who keep turning out to enjoy this remarkable movie,” Robbins added.
Not only did Cruise deliver an outstanding performance in his returning role but Cruise also served as producer on the sequel. His supporting cast including Hollywood regulars, Jennifer Connely, Miles Teller and Jon Hamm.
Meanwhile, Cruise has also left his mark on South Africa after winning over locals in Hoedspruit during filming for Mission Impossible earlier this year.
