Devi Sankaree Govender, 42, investigative journalist for Carte Blanche, shares her tips for organising your home.
- Grab some sturdy apple boxes with lids from the green grocer, and label them however you feel you need to, for example, ‘Bills’, etc. Have a bin bag ready for the rubbish to go into immediately. As you sift through your things, it’s quick and simple to sort it all out, because you just throw them into the relevant box. It’s also easy to take a break between sorting sessions, as the boxes stack away nice and neatly, and you won’t lose track of where you left off.
- Plastic compartment drawers are very handy for keeping little things like receipts in order – doing your taxes can be a nightmare if your receipts are scattered everywhere. Use each drawer for a different purpose, like ‘Urgent’ and ‘To-do’.
- When I do admin, I’ll tackle the most boring things first, and push through to the easier, more fun stuff. Sometimes it’s hard to get going in the first place, but if I do the things I enjoy first, I tend to neglect my least favourite things afterward.
- If you’re moving house, throw out as you pack. My family and I moved a whopping five times in the last 10 years, and I learnt that the one thing I don’t want is to cart old clutter into my new home. Start afresh.
