Local rapper, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, also known as ‘AKA’, passed away in a fatal shooting in Durban last week. His death has been grieved by many in SA and abroad. DJ Zinhle, the mother of Kiernan’s daughter and a famous musician, shared a heartfelt farewell letter to the late rapper on social media recently.

The letter starts with an apology for Kiernan being robbed of his time on Earth with his loved ones.
Zinhle then mentions Kiernan’s mom, girlfriend, and brother and their daughter, Kairo. The former couple welcomed Kairo Owethu Forbes into the world in 2015 and went on to co-parent when they split up. Zinhle goes on to say:
“The thought of her asking questions breaks me. What do I do when she misses and needs you?”
With Kairo being only 7 years old, she may have an understanding of death and what it means, but there’s no denying that this turmoil will leave a mark on the young Kairo. No child deserves the pain of losing a parent.
Zinhle then says:
“The last time I saw you, you told me how proud you are of us and how well we were co-parenting, we had come a long way and even though it challenged a lot of people in how well we co-parented. It was never about society or us, it was always about our daughter and what was best for her.”
Although Zinhle and AKA had their differences and decided to end their romance, their child remained of the utmost importance. Over the years, they perfected co-parenting to the best of their abilities and as ZInhle shares, it was always about what was best for Kairo.
Zinhle is now dating another artist and they share a child together. Together they will raise Kairo. Zinhle shares this sentiment in one part of the letter.

“We will continue to do what’s best for her, we will raise her in a loving environment that encourages forgiveness, one that is deeply rooted in the great spirit of being a family…over everything else. We are all responsible for her happiness now, my family and yours will pull together to make sure she is the happiest girl in the world…exactly how you always made her feel.”
“Good night Kiernan. You told me God is in control, I will hold on to these words as we piece together the pieces of our shattered hearts.”
