Viewers of the long airing medical drama – Grey’s Anatomy are accustomed to changes in cast members.
However, the latest farewell cuts deeper than a knife and stitches won’t hold.
We’ve journeyed with Dr Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, from her very first day as a surgical intern and now – after 19 seasons – she is officially saying farewell. Dr Weber wasn’t lying when he said: “only one of you will survive” in season 1 episode 1. Little did we know it would be Meredith Grey… until now!
Ellen took to Instagram thanking her fans, saying: “I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GREY and the show for 19 seasons! Through it all….none of it …would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all have made the ride so fun and ICONIC!!
I love you madly and appreciate you right back. This isn’t your first time on the rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With a lot of love and immense gratitude Xo, E.”

A history of character cutting
Show creator Shonda Rhimes has taken us through an emotional rollercoaster by ripping influential characters for the medical drama. From Izzie Steven (Katherine Heigl) and Goerge O’ Malley ( T. R. Knight) to Derek Shepard (Patrick Dempsey) and Christana Yang (Sandra Oh), we’ve endured some tough goodbyes.
Shonda also offered her own goodbye message to Ellen on Instagram:

“What a wild ride these past 19 seasons have been,” Rhimes wrote. “None of it could have been possible without the incomparable @ellenpompeo, the one and only Meredith Grey. In true #greysanatomy fashion…this isn’t a goodbye, it’s a see ya later! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Ellen, Meredith and Grey Sloan Memorial.”
She did not confirm whether Grey’s has been renewed for a 20th season.
Fans aren’t ready to say goodbye
Fans are now questioning what Grey’s Anatomy will be without Merdith Grey. There has been speculation that Grey’s Anatomy already lost its essence a few seasons ago, but most can appreciate that we as an audience were captivated for almost two decades.
Viewers have been a part of these doctors lives, taking on the roles of unofficial doctors ourselves. The legacy of Meredith Grey will always live on and we have Ellen Pompeo to thank for that.
Co-star Sarah Drew, who played Dr. April Kepner, exclusively told Us Weekly in September that “She’s been working so hard in this role for so long…it makes sense that she wants to take a breather and pursue some other things — and still keep her foot in the door. … I wish her the best.”
Get the tissues ready – this episode is about to be a tear-jerker, and there is no dancing it out with this one.
