Meghan Markle’s dress was understated and elegant – much like the new Duchess of Sussex herself.

Kensington Palace released a statement as the bride arrived, announcing that Clare Waight Keller, the first female artistic director at French fashion house Givenchy, was the designer of the gown.
The dress was made from double bonded silk cady, while the 5 metre veil was “made from silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza”, the official statement said.

The veil contained a subtle nod to South Africa as well – Meghan asked Clare to include “all 53 countries of the Commonwealth with her on her journey through the ceremony.”
The veil therefore featured the flora from each of the Commonwealth countries in it, including our national flower, the Protea.
According to Kensington Palace, Meghan “wanted to express her gratitude for the opportunity to support the work of the Commonwealth by incorporating references to its members into the design of her wedding dress.”
Meghan’s beautiful diamond tiara was lent to her by the Queen herself. It originally belonged to Queen Mary and contained a broach dating back to 1893.
The veil is held in place by Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, lent to Ms. Markle by The Queen. The diamond bandeau is English and was made in 1932, with the entre brooch dating from 1893.
