Fatherhood is the newest film starring Kevin Hart and streaming on Netflix. Its release was perfectly timed for Father’s Day weekend and has been streamed in over 61-million households since.
Fatherhood follows Kevin’s character Matt Logelin, an American man who becomes a single father after the unexpected death of his wife…just a day after their daughter’s birth. It is a heartbreaking storyline but Kevin Hart carries it out with genuine warmth, and I must say I really enjoyed it!
It is a take on the classic feel-good movie featuring a more modern family set-up than we are used to seeing (despite this coming about without much option on Matt’s part) and will definitely spring some tears if you’re prone to a good cry like I am. While Matt grapples with his sudden new life, Kevin Hart injects just the right amount of humour with more subtlety than he is usually known for. Matt’s daughter, Maddy, was especially entertaining and I loved the determination and individuality they gave the child as she grew older. The dynamics are entertaining too and I am sure parents will have a good giggle at the usual chaos of parenthood!
My only tiny grumble would be the lack of conflict, or perhaps the lack of believable conflict, does make it all a bit flat. However, as a Sunday night movie that isn’t going to ask too much of you it’s the perfect pick. Plus, watching a father of colour portrayed in a positive and affectionate role is something I am all behind. Let’s see more of these please!
