With the much talked about new movie coming to theatres this month, we can’t get enough of anything Beauty and the Beast related. Here’s a look at our favourite actors who’ve played the celebrated, macho role of Gaston over the years.
Luke Evans
This dashing Welsh actor is the latest hunk to take on the role of Gaston in Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast remake. We love his rugged good looks, and somewhat humorous take on the beloved character. His best line in the film? ‘It’s hero time!’
Hugh Jackman
Known for his roles in action films like Logan and X-men, it was a bit of a surprise to hear that Australian leading man Hugh Jackman once took to the Melbourne stage as gorgeous Gaston – black tights and all. But, with his broad shoulders and impressive voice, we’re sure it was a top-notch performance. Here’s evidence of the star on stage, talk about a #throwback…
Richard White
Voicing the character in Disney’s original 1991 animation, this actor is likely to go down in history as the first-ever Gaston. We fell in love with his gruff voice and booming solos in the wonderful children’s story – it’s impossible to imagine that today he’s 63 years old.

Jonathan Roxmouth
In one of his first major stage productions with Pieter Toerien, this local star wowed audiences with his portrayal of gutsy Gaston. Because of this brilliant break-out performance, Jonathan went on to star in hits like Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd. Catch him on stage now as the Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, on at Cape Town’s Theatre on the Bay until 8 April.
