Sinéad O’Connor has passed away at 56 years old.
A statement released by the Irish singer’s family on RTE confirmed her passing on Wednesday, 26 July.
The statement reads:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor was born in Glenageary Dublin in 1966. Her parents separated when she was young and she suffered a traumatic childhood at the hands of an abusive mother.
Music became Sinéad’s saviour, and a stepping stone that led her to greater pastures.
In 1987, O’Connor released her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra. Just two years later, the artist met worldwide fame as the hit track, Nothing Compares 2 U from her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got sold millions of copies worldwide.
The music video for Nothing Compares 2 U has garnered over 400 million views on YouTube, and has inspired the works of global popstars such as Miley Cyrus, in her 2013 hit, Wrecking Ball.
O’Connor, released a total of 10 albums, experimenting with various genres and styles throughout her career.
Sinéad held controversial views on religion, feminism, war, mental health, and sex. The icon has always been outspoken through her music and activism, and has remained transparent about her struggles with mental and physical health with fans and followers.
Sinead O’Connor married four times and has had four children – three sons and a daughter.
She will be remembered as the icon who always stood her ground and moved the masses with her powerful voice and emotive art.
