Julia Roberts, 55-year-old Pretty Woman star, was recently let in on a shocking discovery about her real name on PBS show Ancestry: Finding Your Roots when she found out that her last name is not actually Julia Roberts but rather, Julia Mitchell.
If you’re like us, you’re going “No, surely not? That doesn’t side right?”
The Finding Your Roots show, which traces the ancestry of its guests and often leads to wild revelations, traced the man that Julia had believed to be her great-great-grandfather Willis Roberts’ death to 10 years before the birth of her great-grandfather’s birth, which leaves a rather suspicious gap in the timeline.
This then leads Julia to ask, “So am I not a Roberts?”
Henry Louis Gates Jr, host of the show, then revealed that Roberts’ great-great-grandmother, Rhoda Suttle Roberts, was in fact married to a Willis Roberts but databases also point towards the fact that Rhoda was also married to another man named Henry McDonald Mitchell Jr, whose mother lived just four houses down from Rhoda.
“So we’re Mitchells?” Julia asked, stunned.
Gates Jr. confirmed, saying:
“You’re Julia Mitchell, you are not a Roberts, biologically.”
To which Julia responded:
“Is my head on straight still? Am I facing you?”
Turns out, despite the shocking revelation, Julia still prefers the name Roberts above Mitchell. We do, too.
“On the one hand, I…truly…my mind is blown. And it is fascinating. And on the other hand, there’s part of me that, when I’m calmer, can still wrap my arms around the idea that my family is my family. And I do prefer the name Roberts…”
