On Sunday evening, emotions ran high as Kate Winslet triumphed at the BAFTA awards.
The 47-year-old star was accompanied by her 22-year-old daughter and co-star, Mia Threapleton, at London’s esteemed Royal Festival Hall, where Kate snagged one of the most prestigious awards of the night: Leading Actress for her remarkable performance in the TV drama titled I Am Ruth.
Mia and Kate act as mother and daughter in series, grappling with a strained relationship as Freya (played by Mia) is consumed by the pressures of social media.
In describing the show, Kate says:
“I Am Ruth was made for parents and their children. For families who feel they have been held hostage by the perils of the online world. For parents who wish they could still communicate with their teenagers who no longer can, and for young people who have become addicted to social media and its darker sides. This does not need to be your life.”
“To people in power, and to people who can make change, please criminalise harmful content, please eradicate harmful content, we don’t want it. We want our children back. We don’t want to lie awake terrified for our children’s mental health.”
In accepting her major BAFTA win, Kate directly address her daughter and co-star:
“We did this together, kiddo,”
“There were days when it was agony for her to dig as deeply as she did into very frightening emotional territory sometimes and it took my breath away.”
Touched by her mom’s major win, Mia wiped away tears as Kate sung her praise in her BAFTA award speech.
The win came as a surprise to Kate, who shared the following talking to press:
“I honestly did not think we were going to win so I’m genuinely shocked but so proud because we made something that really touched people and that people really thought about and talked about and are still talking about and still come up to me in the street and talk to me about. That is the most powerful thing about the job that we do is that sometimes you can really reach people.”
The series didn’t only see Kate as the BAFTA winning Leading Actress, but also received the esteemed accolade for Single Drama at the awards ceremony.
