One month after the Bokke claimed their Rugby World Cup (RWC) victory, star-wing Cheslin Kolbe, his wife Layla and their three children have just made the move from their home in France to Japan, where Cheslin will be joining Japanese rugby club, Suntory Sungoliath.

The couple arrived at their new stomping grounds just over a week ago, after spending a brief stint in Cape Town and Stellenbosch, where the Kolbe’s celebrated the RWC win and Cheslin’s 30th birthday.
After a few days of finding their feet as they start their new venture in Japan, Layla Kolbe took a moment to reflect on the journey that got the Bokke to the finish line, highlighting the sacrifices and the belief that went into gearing up for victory.

With an Instagram carousel of snaps of the Kolbe gang on the night of the Springbok’s historical win in Paris, Layla writes:
“Bothered me that we couldn’t get ‘the perfect family photo with the cup’ that night. Couldn’t even get us all on the field!
But just realised, a whole month later, it wasn’t about the cup for us as a family, but all the sacrifice along the way, behind the scenes and the significance of it alone is so much more!”
As irksome as it may have been not to get the perfect shot of the entire gang on the field and in the frame on the night of the victory, Layla realised that it was the journey to be thankful for, instead. The sacrifice and hard work that went into securing the RWC – by the players and their families – is not overlooked, at least in Kolbe’s eyes.
She concludes:
“We have prayed and believed for this for so long! For those that doubted us, for those that gave up on us, for those that didn’t believe we could! God proved that we only needed 1 point to prove them wrong, 3 times!!! That’s God-given!”
Here’s to wishing the Kolbe family all the best as they start their new adventure in the beautiful country of Japan!
