Lira, born Lerato Moipone Molapo, has claimed back her spot on stage as she picks up on performances after two years of recovering from a stroke that forced the singer to relearn basic communication skills.
Lira has slowly started to pick up on her number of stage performances, after suffering an ischemic stroke in Germany, in 2022. The singer lost her ability to communicate, forcing her to relearn basic skills such as reading, writing and speaking, let alone singing.
In an interview Lira did with Kaya FM, she said:
“I had to learn reading and writing from scratch.”
Two years later, the singer has found her place back on stage, and is picking up on performances.
Lira celebrated how far she has come after performing at Nirox Sculpture Park with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra for Mother’s Day on Sunday. She wrote:
“This was so surreal! I never thought I would be sing so soon … I’ve worked hard but there’s times when the progress was SO slow. Now I know that you can achieve anything you put your mind to – just do the work daily. Even if it seems you are making no progress – just keep going.”

Lira first returned to stage in September 2023, a year after suffering the stroke.
Taking to stage then, Lira said that she was still learning to speak and was “in no way ready to sing”, but that she would try.
Now, another year later, Lira returned with a spellbinding performance alongside the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra:

“I’m so PROUD of myself. I’m experiencing the season of being proud of myself. It was so emotional – I cried many tears yesterday – I released so much. Tears of pride, joy and triumph !! 🙏🏾❤️”
Lira has another show lined up at Bassline Festival at Constitution Hill on 25 May.
