Local artists have joined forces to organise a benefit concert in support of renowned celebrity chef Fatima Sydow, who has been battling Soft Tissue Sarcoma since her diagnosis in December 2020.
The event, titled “A Song for You, Fatima Sydow,” is scheduled to take place on October 4 at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, and it aims to raise funds to assist Sydow, who recently shared that her condition had progressed to stage 4.
The initiative is spearheaded by local singer Nur Abrahams, who felt a deep personal connection to Sydow’s struggle.
Abrahams, who lost his father to cancer, empathised with Sydow’s plea for financial support after being unable to work due to her illness. As quoted by IOL, Abrahams says:
“I lost my dad to cancer and I think for all of us, its a pleasure to do this for Fatima as we all have, at some point, spent time with her, enjoyed her food and her lovely personality.”
“It’s an emotional decision but I needed to do this for her so she doesn’t have the worry of expenses and she can focus on fighting this battle and healing.”
“Everyone is performing for her for free and the Artscape gave us the venue at no cost.”
“It hurt to watch a Tiktok video of Fatima having to ask people to help her financially, and to see her break as (it was) just a lot so we needed to do this.”

Local artists rallied around the cause, and the Artscape Theatre generously agreed to provide the venue at no cost.
Artists to the likes of Vicky Sampson, Robin Pieters, Nuraan Boltman, Alistair Izobell, Terry Fortune, Alfred Adriaan, Emo Adams, Craig Lucas, and many more are set to grace the stage, with Basil Appollis directing the show.
Fatima Sydow, known for her culinary expertise, cookbook authorship, and TV show hosting, has played a pivotal role in promoting traditional South African cuisine both locally and internationally. Her recipes have become an integral part of South Africa’s rich culinary heritage.
Sydow, touched by the outpouring of support, posted to Instagram sharing that all tickets for the concert have already sold out!
