Gardiner, South Africa’s first Miss Universe winner in 1978, made her pageantry comeback this year as a judge for the 73rd Miss Universe pageant.
Following the announcement by Mia Le Roux and Miss South Africa, the former beauty queen shared two heartfelt posts on social media. Both posts expressed the sentiment of South African fans, who are saddened by Le Roux’s withdrawal, but no less inspired.
In a video, she says: “Know that [we]… were fully invested in seeing you absolutely shine, like we knew you would. Our main concern is that you heal quickly and know that destiny is waiting to take you in its wings and carry you to other greater heights…we are proud.”
