Olivia Munn took to social media on Wednesday, sharing that she has undergone a double mastectomy following a Luminal B breast cancer diagnosis.
Days after attending the Oscars, the 43-year-old actress took to Instagram with a statement and images that documented her journey after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis and undergoing a double mastectomy.
Munn’s statement detailed that she had been diagnosed with cancer in both of her breasts in February 2023 after her doctor, Dr. Thais Aliabadi, had discovered the actress was at elevated risk for breast cancer via a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment, which looks at factors such as age and familial breast cancer history.
30 days later, Munn was in hospital for a 10-hour double mastectomy.
“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next.” said Munn in her statement.
The actress expresses her luck in catching the disease early, adding that if it weren’t for the risk assessment test conducted by Dr Aliabadi, the cancer would have only been discovered a year later at her annual mammogram checkup.
Munn goes on to urge women to ask their doctors to calculate a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment score. According to Dr. Aliabadi, if the risk is higher than 20%, one would need annual mammograms and breast MRIs starting at age 30.
“Thank you to the friends who’ve had breast cancer and the friends who connected me to friends who’ve had breast cancer for guiding me through some of my most uncertain and overwhelming moments.” says Munn, concluding her statement.
