On 6th February 2022 Queen Elizabeth became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne. Now that sunnier days have arrived in the UK Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations are in full swing. Stretching from today to Sunday there will be plenty joyous events taking place across the UK.
Luckily there’s a few of them we can watch from SA! Here’s what to keep your eye on and where to catch them.

The Jubilee celebrations to watch this weekend
Thursday, 2 June:
Trooping the Colour – BBC World News & Sky News, 11:00
This annual event has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for over 260 years. The birthday parade includes 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians. They are then joined by royal family members either on horseback or in carriages. This is also when the famous balcony moment occurs. Of course, there has been much debate on who has been allowed a spot and who hasn’t!
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – BBC News Special, 19:00
Not an event but an hour-long special by Katty Kay looking back on the day’s events and what is to come for the rest of the weekend. A great way to catch up and gain insight from interviews with members of the public present at the events, those taking part and, royal experts.
The Jubilee Beacon Show – BBC World News & Sky News, 22:00
More than 2 000 candles, or beacons, will be lit up across the UK and the Commonwealth to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne. This forms part of a long-0standing tradition to celebrate royal weddings, coronations, and jubilees. The principle beacon will be a ‘tree of trees’ sculpture at Buckingham Palace.
Friday, 3 June:
Service of Thanksgiving – Sky News, 08:00
Presenter Kay Burley will start the day at St Paul’s Cathedral where a special thanksgiving service will be held as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations. Kay will be joined by those taking part in the service as well as correspondents around the UK to discuss the events so far and those coming up. The service itself will not be broadcast.

Saturday, 4 June:
Jubilee Breakfast – Sky News, 07:00
Wake up with Kamali Melbourne outside Buckingham Palace as people around UK mark the third day of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.
The Queen at War – BBC Lifestyle, 19:00
An hour-long documentary that explores the then rather young royal’s experiences during the Second World War. It reflects on the moments that transformed a teenage princess into Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
BBC Platinum Party at the Palace – BBC Lifestyle, 20:30
Two and a half hours of entertainers brought together for musical performance in a star-studded line-up. This variety show is broadcast live, sure to bring some fun to the TV!
Sunday, 5 June:
Jubilee Breakfast – BBC World News, 07:00
Join Sophy Ridge outside Buckingham Palace on the final day of Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations. Sophy will look at the day ahead chatting about the final big events taking place.
The Big Jubilee Lunch – BBC World News & Sky News, 12:00
Over 10 million people in the UK alone are expected to join in the lunch celebrations. Both news stations will be covering live events in the UK, including attempts to break the world record for the longest street party, and those of the Commonwealth joining in.
On Sky News Kay Burley will be joined by Joanna Lumley and Sky royal events commentator Alastair Bruce. Anita McVeigh and Martine Croxall will present the special coverage from BBC.
The Jubilee Pageant – Sky News, 16:00
10,000 people have come together to create the Pageant, including the military, over 6,000 volunteers, performers, key workers, and 2,500 members of the general public. Kay Burley, Joanna Lumly, and Alastair Bruce will be your hosts from home as the UK gathers for one big hooray!
