The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store

The owners of the popular The Whippet in Linden recently opened their second store in the heart of Melville. The beautiful harvest store is, just like its older sibling, the epitome of a true neighbourhood spot. As explained by the owners themselves: “Driven by our love for Joburg and every unique neighbourhood we call home. Each store is a champion of coffee excellence and food innovation.”
The food
If you love good coffee, The Whippet is your spot. But the new harvest store doesn’t serve great coffee alone. Their head of innovation, Suzanne Botha is responsible for the delicious foodie options on their menu (which changes every seven weeks). From Nutella chocolate flapjacks to a bunny chow Florentine and probably the best mini milk tarts (baked in house by a team of bakers) you will ever eat, this store is ideal for a lazy Sunday morning breakfast or Saturday afternoon lunch.
Try the smashed avo wake-up: zesty smashed avocado, bright pickled red onion and a soft poached egg on seeded health toast. The french omelette filled with cheddar cheese and served with a special Whippet tomato relish is another great option. If you’re looking for something different, give the baked sweet potato with BBQ chicken and smashed avocado a go.

Décor & ambience
Taking an old Art Deco Hotel and changing it into a space that captures the heartbeat of Melville is something that design sisters Korine Krüger and Sanet Stegmann from KASSA studio were tasked with by the The Whippet’s owners. “Our core philosophy is capturing the heartbeat of a suburb,” says founder Divan Botha. And that is exactly what they did. With flowers from Melville Koppies pressed into a glass wall to a handwoven rug outlining the map of Melville and tiles handmade by locals, the décor undoubtedly speaks to the heart of the neighbourhood.
As the name implies, this harvest store harvests its own fruit, vegetables and herbs on the very cute rooftop (with one of the best views of Joburg). “We would love to eventually sell our produce to clients,” says Divan.
The rooftop adds to the store’s ambience. With their first (successful) rooftop gin event taking place only a few weeks ago, The Whippet Melville is planning on hosting even more fun rooftop events. Take a look at their Instagram page here for more.
