South African artist Cow Mash has created the country’s first-ever edible and spreadable sculpture, using a modified butter spread.
Known for her work in black and white, Mash recently took on the challenge of working with a new and rather unusual medium— a modified butter spread made by Stork.
Mash, who initially found it daunting to create art meant to be consumed – diverging from the traditional notion of art being observed from a distance – leaned into the slippery experience of working with a form of butter, and created something truly out-of-the-ordinary in the process.
Despite obvious hurdles like temperature control and working with a softer material than what she was used to, Mash created a one-of-a-kind, and quite proudly South African work of art.

Inspired by the sharing spirit of her late grandmother, Mash named the piece Gopolang Gae (Remember Home).
Unveiled at private exhibition in Johannesburg, the sculpture took form as a bowl-like structure that guests could dig into while admiring the unique work and medium.
“There’s a beauty to a gathering of people coming together to consume a labour of love,” shares Mash.
