Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale has just been released on Showmax, with the first two episodes available online for binging! In the newest season of the fan favourite Margaret Atwood adaptation, we witness the long reaching impacts of trauma and trek the unpredictable path of the Handmaid’s characters ahead.
In the fourth season released in 2021, we followed June and Janine (Elisabeth Moss and Madeline Brewer) as they escaped from Gilead. As June went on to seek asylum in Canada, Janine was forced back to the Republic of Gilead, under close watch by Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd).
The season ended in rebellion, as June and other former handmaids sought their vengeance against Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) beating him to death, leaving him in the No Man’s Land forest.
Season five picks up hours later, setting the stage for more dystopian drama, as the characters navigate a first breath of freedom in Canada whilst unravellings occur in Gilead.
News of the show being renewed for a sixth and final season leaves us in anticipation for what the fifth instalment could bring. Catch a new episode on Showmax every Thursday.
