Tyla made her inaugural debut at the Met Gala last night in a spectacular sand-sculpted ensemble that perfectly embodied the Sands of Time. It matched this year’s Garden of Time theme perfectly.
Tyla has left her mark on the international stage since last year, with her single Water charting on the Billboard Top 100 and bagging her very first Grammy. The 22-year-old has also featured on the Forbes 30 under 30 list and featured on Harper’s Bazaar.

She has also wowed audiences around the world whilst walking the red carpets of this year’s awards shows in a few incredible ensembles.
For the 2024 Met Gala, Tyle wore a Balmain gown, paired with sandy makeup on her shoulder and an hourglass purse. Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain, told Vogue “The inspiration behind this creation stemmed from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece.” He went on to say, “. “The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination, and I could not be happier with the result.”
Tyla also mentioned that for her first Met Gala look, they wanted to “do something different.” Whilst other A-list celebrities donned floral gowns and suits with bedecked-in clocks, Tyla was the only one in the sand.
Her strapless dress was skin-tight and flared at the base in a spectacular mermaid train. Rousteing made the gown with three colours of sand, mixed with microcrystals, which gave the dress a shimmering finish, much like moving sand.
The creative director has given her a new title to pair with Grammy-winning superstar – a true fashion star.
“Tyla pushes the boundaries of music in a similar way that I push the boundaries of fashion with Balmain,” he told Vogue. “I could not think of a better woman to wear this look that I feel is a manifestation of imagination, innovation, and the transformative power of art.”
