There really is something for everyone in this month’s list of new releases, whether you’re looking for a romance or a laugh-out-loud comedy.
The Intern
Known for her films What Women Want and Something’s Gotta Give, director Nancy Meyers dishes up something that’s equally sweet and funny with The Intern. The relationship between retiree Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) and fashion-site CEO Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) is unlikely and untraditional but, on the whole, both real and entertaining.

Holmes
The celebrated Sir Ian McKellen plays retired Sherlock Holmes in this mystery crime-drama. Unhappy with how his and ex-partner John Watson’s last case was depicted, he strives to write his own version, but his failing memory makes it a difficult exercise. Through the help of his housekeeper’s son, he slowly starts remembering what happened with that unsolved case 50 years ago.

Everest
A deadly snowstorm breaks out, turning the already-trying climbing conditions into an extreme struggle for two climbing teams battling their way to the top. The film is based on the true story of a disastrous 1996 climbing expedition up Mount Everest, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Keira Knightley. You’ll want to see this action-thriller in 3D!

Tell me Something Sweet
You’ll find yourself spotting familiar landmarks in this charming Joburg-based flick, starring IsiBaya actress Nomzamo Mbatha and I am South African TV host Maps Maponyane. It’s a love story about an ordinary girl who gets swept off her feet by a man she sees each day – gracing a huge billboard!

Part of the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, this one promises to be a light-hearted film that’ll have you feeling better about your own family’s antics! Ed Helms and Christina Applegate star as a married couple taking their kids on a cross-country adventure for a family getaway. They discover new things about themselves and each other, with hilarious results! Grab the popcorn!

Ricki and the Flash
Three-time Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep stars in this quirky comedy as ex-rock star Ricki, who returns home after her guitar-strumming career with The Flash comes to an end. Keen to set things right with the family she abandoned to pursue her dream, Ricki must rebuild many relationships. Also starring Kevin Kline as Ricki’s ex-husband, and Meryl Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer as her estranged daughter.

Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes star as Catherine and Matthew Parker, a couple living in the remote outback, in this epic Australian drama. Their family is rocked to its core after their two teenage children disappear into the desert one night. An eerie, dusty Australian landscape provides the perfect setting for this stark, gripping tale.
