A recent interview with The Mirror revealed that 57-year-old I Feel Like A Woman singer Shania Twain has struggled with self-doubt about her appearance for years, but has now learned to embrace her body, flaws and all, without going under the knife as many celebrities past the 50-year mark have.
Dubbed the Queen of Country for her empowering hit anthems like That Don’t Impress Me Much, Shania has become the best-selling female artist in country music history. Making her debut on stage at only eight years old, Shania grew up feeling self-conscious about her developing body whilst having to perform live in front of an audience.
“I was freaking out inside but nobody knew it,” she said. “Now, I look at myself naked and I like the honesty about myself.”
“There were times I did like turning the lights off as all I could see were the imperfections so I said, ‘OK, how can I face this and get this to a point where I accept it?’”
“So I did a nude photography session to find a more healthy and realistic perspective on myself. I thought, ‘I am just going to force myself through this’.”
“I say you should look in the mirror and be fine with that. I am only going to get older and saggier – if I hate myself now then what state am I going to be in in five or 10 years?”
Take it from the Queen of Country, sometimes all you need to embrace your flaws is to push yourself into a scenario where you face them head-on, even if that means stripping down in front of the lens in your birthday suit – you go girl!
“I think ‘resilient’ is a word that describes me very well… you have to recognise that you are feeling down but at some point, you have to get out of it and find strength to carry on with a good attitude. I am not someone who gives up and quits.”
With her last album release dating back all the way to 2011, Shania’s long-awaited new album and tour will see her performing in the UK later this year. Beyond her upcoming album, Shania is part of the judge panel on ITV’s Starstruck along with fellow judges Adam Lambert, Beverley Knight and Jason Manford.
