South African singer Bulelwa Mkutukana, known as Zahara, sadly passed away on Monday night at the age of 35.
The singer’s family, who have not yet released a statement of Bulelwa’s passing, previously released a statement on 27 November detailing that the South African music icon had been admitted into hospital for a week, due to liver complications that had been causing her pain.
The statement read:
“Zahara has been admitted to the hospital for a week following complaints about physical pains. The doctors are working diligently and we await further updates from them.”
Minister of Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa sadly confirmed Zahara’s passing on Monday evening, with a statement released to X:
“I am very saddened by the passing of [Zahara]. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

Another statement by Warner Music Africa mourns the loss of the South African music icon:
“Warner Music Africa deeply mourns the sudden departure of Zahara, our esteemed South African singer-songwriter recognised for her multi-platinum successes and 17-time SAMA-winning impact on the music scene.”
Zahara, affectionately known as South Africa’s cherished Country Girl, leaves a lasting legacy marked by the hauntingly soulful and profoundly emotive tones of her voice.”

“Zahara was a true music icon, a force whose soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics resonated deeply with fans across South Africa and beyond. Her impact on the music industry is immeasurable, and her legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who found solace and joy in her music.”
Zahara, whose full name was Bulelwa Mkutukana, grew up in the informal settlement of Phumlani outside of East London. There, she discovered her passion for singing in school and church choirs.
In 2011, at 23-years old, Zahara released her debut album Loliwe, clinching double platinum status in less than two weeks.
Throughout her career, she released a total of five soulful albums which earned her a total of 17 South African Music Awards and three Metro FM awards, cementing her spot as a South African music legend.
Zahara was admired internationally, making the ranks of BBC’s 100 Women list in 2020, joining the likes of icons such as Jane Fonda and Michelle Yeoh.
