The dress code for 2024’s Met Gala has been announced, and as usual for the Met, it’s as cerebral as it is ethereal.
Set to open at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA) on May 6th, the anticipated Met Gala 2024 is fast approaching.
The annual dress code has been unveiled as ‘The Garden of Time,’ tying in with this year’s overarching Met Gala theme and exhibition concept, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,’
The exhibition will be spearheaded by co-chairs Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour and will celebrate “fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again” with archival looks from the Costume Institute, curated by the esteemed Andrew Bolton, as per Vogue.
According to MoMA, the anticipated ‘Sleeping Beauties’ exhibit will transcend traditional fairy tales, exploring the natural world through the 17th-century Elizabethan-era bodice, balancing concepts of fragility and decay. Adding to the mix, modern, less delicate pieces will showcased alongside the archival pieces, broken up into three sub-categories: Land, Sea, and Sky.
The exhibit, which opens the day of the Met, will run until September 2024.
The dress code of 2024’s Met Gala, named ‘The Garden Of Time’ will draw inspiration from the exhibition, and author J.G. Ballard’s evocative short story of the same name.
The curated list of special attendees will be tasked with interpreting a theme that intertwines the ephemeral beauty of fashion with the inexorable passage of time – in short, The Garden Of Time represents the concept of fleeting beauty. Leave it up to MoMA to keep things cerebral.
The dress code does, however, serve as a poignant reminder of fashion’s transient nature. We’re looking forward to seeing how this theme is interpreted by Wintour’s list of esteemed guests invited to the gala this year.
