We couldn’t be more excited about the news that Africa’s very first Netflix Original series, Queen Sono, is set to premiere in January next year. We’ve seen a run of brilliant local TV, from Showmax’s The Girl from St. Agnes to the recent Deon Meyer adaptation, Trackers. It seems African and South African productions are on the rise and we’re behind them 100%.

Here’s everything we know so far about the new Netflix production, Queen Sono…
It’s an action-packed spy drama
While the plot for the series is still relatively unknown, we can tell you that it centres around an SA spy called Queen Sono. Filming for the six-part series kicked off earlier this year on various locations around SA. From what we’ve heard, it promises fight scenes, tense plot twists and a fair share of family drama.

It stars a very beautiful proudly South African actress
Our very own Pearl Thusi takes on the title role as Queen Sono herself. The character is a feisty and highly-trained spy who takes on her most dangerous mission yet, while facing changes in many personal relationships. In a YouTube video that went up last year, Pearl said she hopes the role helps to put African and South African talent on the map.
Look out for cameo roles from some of SA’s acting darlings
There’s no doubt that the production boasts an all-star cast. Joining Pearl Thusi is Five Fingers for Marseilles star, Vuyo Dabula who plays an ex-spy. The likes of Sechaba Morojele, and Loyiso Madinga also star as lead characters, but it’s two old-school actresses that we’re really excited about. Stalwart Abigail Kubekha rounds out the main cast, playing Queen’s beloved grandmother, and Connie Chiume heads up the supporting cast.

There’s help from an Emmy-nominated production company
Joburg-based production company, Diprente, is at the helm of the series. They’re the people behind celebrated local rom-com Catching Feelings as well as the Emmy-nominated Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola. With big names on board, backed by all the expertise and power that Netflix brings, this is sure to be a banger.
We’ll keep you updated with any further info and watch out for that final premiere date announcement!
