I’m no culinary whizz in the kitchen, but for the most part (5/7 days a week, on average) I’ll cook a full, healthy meal for myself and my partner for dinner. The other 2/7 nights? Those are girl dinner nights.

You know, when you’ve had a particularly rough or exhausting day and don’t feel like cooking a full-on meal? When you grab a plate and raid the fridge and pantry to create a platter of ‘charcuterie adjacent’ – as Washington Post calls it – nibbly bits.
What makes it onto your plate? According to TikTok user Olivia Maher who started the trend, a ‘girl dinner’ might consist of bits of bread, cheese, perhaps a few grapes, a handful of capers and even a glass of wine. Sounds dreamy, no?

Maher says that these foods, in medieval times, were considered peasant food. Now? A totally acceptable excuse for supper, backed by millions of women who have posted variations of their own ‘girl dinners’ to the platform online, adding to the trend.
It’s a term that finally represents a concept that women, up until now, have not been able to put into words. What do we want for dinner? We want girl dinner.
Whether it’s a wrap topped with a dazzle of cheese and tomato puree then thrown into a pan, a bowl of popcorn with a side of pickles and a bounty bar, or a handful of crackers with a bit of cheddar cheese – it hits the spot, and I won’t give up girl dinner for anything.
