A royal recap
The Princess Diaries follows the life of Mia, an ordinary teenage girl played by Anne Hathaway, who suddenly learns she is a princess and heir to the Genovian throne. We all remember the iconic “shut up!” scene, when Anne’s character discovers the shocking news.
Under the guidance of her long last grandmother – the Queen of Genovia – played by Julie Andrews, Mia is taught the in and outs of becoming a princess. At the end of the first movie, Mia chooses to accept the title of princess.
In the second movie, Mia learns she will take over the role of queen but needs to be married first. Through a process of an arranged marriage, she discovers the trials and tribulations of what it takes to run a country. Not following through with the marriage plot, she still becomes the queen of Genovia.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed from a source that the third edition of the movie series will be a continuation rather than a reboot.
The royal cast
With the film still being in the early stages of development, the cast has not been confirmed, but has been confirmed as an upcoming Disney film. We all long for the original cast to make their appearance out of pure 2000s nostalgia, but only time will tell who will grace the screen this time round.
Sadly, the one person who won’t be making a comeback is Julie Andrews as her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.
Andrews told Entertainment Tonight:
“I think it would be too late to do it now. Especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
“I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know.”
She added: “It depends on what the story is and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful. But if not, there will be other things.”
Luckily Anne Hathaway, the queen herself, is keen to return to the franchise! She told Entertainment Tonight that she “would more than entertain it.”
She then shared: “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen”
The Princess Dairies 3 royal release date
The news of the third film is still hot off the press, so a release date has not been set just yet. We are still basking in the hype of another PD movie. For now, all we can do is wait. Trust us to binge-watch the first and second movies in the meantime!
