Everyone’s favourite prestigious fashion event is in the spotlight once again as the Met Gala theme for 2023 has just been revealed. Last year’s theme, In America: An Anthology Of Fashion,’ saw the who’s who of celebrities strut the Met’s red carpet in iconic fashion. Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe moment and Blake Lively’s reversible gown affair will never be forgotten. Now, the theme for 2023’s Met Gala has been announced, and it’s a tribute to one of the 21st century’s greatest designers: Karl Lagerfeld.
Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty
The late fashion designer, who passed away in 2019, held massive influence over the fashion landscape from his beginnings in the 1950s right through until 2019 before he passed away. In homage to Karl Lagerfeld’s life in Fashion, the 2023 Met Gala will showcase approximately 150 pieces from Karl’s designs for brands like Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Patou and Chloé. The annual event will also showcase some of Lagerfeld’s own original works, with original sketches to accompany.
When is it?
The Met Gala, held as a fundraiser for New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute annually, has always taken place at the Met on the first Monday of May since 1972. If the past is anything to go by, 2023’s Met Gala will be taking place on Monday, 1st of May, 2023.
Who’s on the guest list?
Not just anyone scores an invite to the year’s most anticipated fashion event. Current editor-in-chief at Vogue, Anna Wintour, painstakingly selects and plans every minuscule detail of the Met Gala, from the guest list to seating. In an interview with Page Six, a former employee who spent eleven years at Vogue said the following about Anna’s guest lists for the gala:
“That guest list is so tailored. You can have a million people willing to spend any amount of money on a ticket, but there has to be a reason for you being there, and Anna has such an unbelievably strategic way of getting the right people in the right room at the same time … it’s like a chess game and she knows how to play it.”
She added:
“She knows everyone in the room, it’s like a movie, she’s gone over every single name.”
