A 75-second trailer has just been released for the new live action Barbie film co-written by Noah Baumbach and director Greta Gerwig. Since the news of the film’s release earlier this year, we’ve been dying to know how the story would be framed. With stars like Margot Robbie and Rylan Gosling making the cast, there has to be more to it than just live action Barbie.
After a first look at the trailer, it’s obvious that there’s much more to expect from this film…
The trailer to the live action is only a minute and fifteen seconds long, but packs enough to get one excited about the direction the film has taken. Film buffs amongst us will have already picked up on the gleaming reference to filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey in the opening sequence of the trailer.
Little girls are strewn across an Earthy, empty landscape playing with their baby dolls when suddenly a colossal Barbie appears in monolithic fashion, sporting the original striped costume designed by Mattel, which the doll wore when first released in 1959.
A narrator’s voice is heard:
“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until …”
After the parodic reference to Kubrick’s film, the trailer transitions from one quick snippet of Barbie’s life in plastic to the next, shrouded in hues of pink. We catch a glimpse of Ryan Gosling in his role as Ken, and the promo ends with a shot of Margot Robbie and cast in the middle of a choreographed dance number.
With a star cast like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, featuring familiar faces like Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon and Ncuti Gatwa, we’ve got high hopes for the movie. The short trailer doesn’t give much away, but it does touch on the fact that Barbie may not be what we’re expecting after all…
Barbie will be released in July 2023.
