Christmas is around the corner and everyone is getting ready for it. Present lists are finalised, Christmas movie nights are being organised and the annual stream of classic festive tunes are blasting out of our car radios once again. But there’s one classic jingle that is set to get a bit of a makeover this year – and it’s all to do with highlighting the importance of sexual consent…

We secretly love the annual line-up of festive ditties that get ingrained in our heads between November and New Year’s Eve. Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Driving Home for Christmas, All I Want For Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock. But there’s one tune that, when we actually listen to the lyrics properly, seems rather inappropriate.
Which classic track is it?
Written by American songwriter Frank Loesser Baby, It’s Cold Outside has been part of the annual Christmas playlist since we can remember. It made its debut way back in 1944.
Many merry folk sing along to it at festive get-togethers, thinking the jam is purely a romantic Christmas jingle. But, when you listen carefully to the lyrics, you find that’s far from what it actually is.

The song is really about a man not letting a woman leave and go home.
He spends the entirety of the classic tune urging the woman to spend the night with him. And, the woman repeatedly refuses and even asks at one point “Hey, what’s in this drink?”
Who is singing the reboot?
After the strength of 2017’s #MeToo movement, the song is now being re-released with brand new lyrics – and by none other than superstars Kelly Clarkson and John Legend.
The musical duo has reworked the lyrics to the Christmas classic to be suitable for today’s post #MeToo movement world.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, singer John Legend revealed that he had rewritten the tune with American writer and comedian Natasha Rothwell and had recorded it with his fellow The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson.
The new lyrics even include a line by John where he sings “It’s your body, and your choice.”

How can you listen to it?
The pair performed their new version of the track live on stage in a recent episode of The Voice but, if you missed it, you can still hear the track for yourself. The new tune will be featured on John’s festive album A Legendary Christmas, and is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.
We’re ready for all the seasonal jingles!
