The trailer for the documentary looking back on the career of Brooke Shields has been released and has already struck a chord with audiences. In the trailer, we learn that Shields started modelling when she was only 11 months old, and hereafter rose to fame as “Hollywood’s darling.”
As “the most photographed woman” at the time, Brooke become a pin-up of sexual desire and objectification when she was only a child. Forced into a world of skeevy Hollywood adults, Brooke was exploited into sexual roles in films like Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, as well as Calvin Klein ads which further secured her vulnerable status as a child sex symbol.
The documentary looks at how Shield became a victim of the ugly underside side of Hollywood at such a young age and places emphasis on the fact that this behaviour is a systemic problem still present in Hollywood today.
Shield’s message is a powerful one aimed at other women and young girls who need a glimpse of hope, involved in an industry that still has a very long way to go. In chatting about being catapulted into the world of adult sexuality as a young girl, Brooke says:
“I’m amazed that I survived any of it”
“I was struggling to find my own voice. I wasn’t told it was important to have agency”
Fighting to remove herself from the stereotypes attached to her as a child, Brooke attended college and re-entered the Hollywood film industry as an adult, making a new name for herself with her roles in A Castle for Christmas and upcoming Netflix film, Mother of the Bride.
Now, the star is sharing a very important message to women and girls being exploited, controlled and commodified. In the upcoming documentary directed by Lana Wilson which will be released on the 3rd of April, Brooke shares a strong message of hope and strength.
