We’ve noticed a growing trend in South Africa where restaurants are offering more than just a simple chocolate brownie for dessert. Pudding is now an experience; with freak shakes, swanky macarons and gourmet waffles being just the start. While there’s also a strong trend towards healthy food and mindful eating, we firmly believe that sometimes one just needs to indulge (a little). So, we selflessly took it upon ourselves to find the holy grail of dessert spots in South Africa for you to discover, taste, and enjoy. You’re welcome.

1. Le Kreamery – Centurion
Any place that calls itself a “dessert lounge” is our kind of haunt. Aside from offering everything from smoothie bowls and overnight oats to pasta and pizza, Le Kreamery makes “World Famous Desserts”, freak waffles and freakishly decadent milkshakes. Reflect on the day as you dip your choc chip cookie and brownie fries into caramel, Nutella and Kinder sauces, or opt for a chocolate brownie served in a sizzling pan. It’s totally worth the sugar rush.

2. Häagen-Dazs – Johannesburg
Ask anyone with a sweet tooth where to go for the smoothest ice cream, and the answer will be Häagen-Dazs. Open until 10pm at the Zone in Rosebank, Häagen-Dazs also offers other temptations to satisfy that post-dinner craving. We’re talking brownies, crêpes, and waffles – all served with scoops of their incredible ice cream. But the real McCoy is their fondue, which comes with scoops of ice cream, brownie pieces, cookies, fresh fruit and Belgian chocolate dipping sauce.

3. Plan B Dessertery – Durban North
If artery-clogging goodness is what you’re after, look no further than this dessert-only eatery. The signature dish is the bubble waffle, topped with all manner of naughtiness. If that’s not enough to pique your fancy, there are also gourmet milkshakes, dessert tacos and churros up for grabs.

4. My Sugar – Cape Town
Here to ruin your waistline is My Sugar in Sea Point, Cape Town. This chocolate and coffee bar is our kind of late night hangout. In addition to beautiful, handcrafted chocolate and confectionery, these chocolate artisans create the most sensational doughnuts. Try the Creme Brûlée option that’s filled with vanilla bean custard and topped with a hard crack caramel or the Samoa – milk chocolate ganache, caramelised coconut and salted caramel. Or, throw all caution to the wind and order a hot chocolate shot with delicious mini doughnuts for dipping. You deserve it.

5. Honest Artisan Chocolate – Cape Town
For something a little less naughty (but still totally delicious), make your way to the Honest Chocolate Café in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD. This small artisanal Bean to Bar chocolate company is all about what’s local, organic and fair trade, which makes you feel rather virtuous while you indulge in all their decadent offerings (banana bread bunny chow?!). They also use raw Tanzanian cacao with no added preservatives, which means you get the purest form of these heavenly delights.

6. Savages Fine Food – Port Elizabeth
Life is about enjoying the little things… like a Turkish delight milkshake from Savages in Port Elizabeth. A mixture of a French-style café and an Italian-style deli, Savages serves a variety of tasty treats to tempt you. It’s probably a good idea to line your stomach with something savoury before you dive head-first into their Salted Caramel milkshake (homemade caramel pieces, crunchy pretzels and caramel popcorn), but if that’s your idea of dinner we certainly won’t judge you.
