Overpacking is a habit many of us have. But, when you’re tasked with packing for an 11-day trip to multiple European cities and a destination wedding with just a carry-on suitcase, you suddenly realise how easy it is to pack light.
Not only do you avoid packing unnecessary items, but travelling so light makes walking through airports a breeze, and you can kiss all that wasted time in the baggage claims and check-in lines goodbye. Oh, and it’s a lot easier to get from place to place if you get lost in a foreign city (guilty).
Now, no matter what trip I’m going on, I only use a carry-on and backpack. Here’s how I do it.

Planning is key
Before you toss everything in your suitcase, take a deep breath and plan your outfits. Consider the destination’s climate, planned activities, and the overall vibe. Aim for a cohesive colour palette that allows easy mixing and matching. Think neutrals as your base, with pops of colour in accessories. A handy trick is to create outfit “formulas” – for instance, a flowy maxi dress that can be dressed up with heels or down with sandals.
Master the art of multi-tasking clothes
Gone are the days of packing a different outfit for every occasion. Invest in versatile pieces that can be transformed with layering and accessories. A wrinkle-resistant wrap dress can go from daytime chic to dinner date glam with a statement necklace and heels. Pack pants that can be dressed up with a blazer or dressed down with a cute tee.
Embrace the power of polling
Rolling clothes is a space-saving game-changer. Not only does it prevent wrinkles, but it allows you to maximize every nook and cranny of your suitcase. Rolling also helps you visualize what you’ve packed, making outfit planning on the go a breeze.
Packing Cubes are your new best friends
Invest in a set of packing cubes. These colourful compartments help you organize your clothes by category (tops, bottoms, delicates) and compress them for maximum space efficiency. They also keep your suitcase tidy, preventing that frantic rummaging through clothes for a specific item.
Think outside the box (or suitcase)
Utilise your “personal item” allowance to its full potential. A sturdy backpack is a great choice, doubling as your carry-on for essentials like your laptop, book, and travel documents. Pack a scarf or sarong in your purse – it can be used as a beach cover-up, a light blanket on the plane, or even a makeshift scarf.
Toiletries: less is more
Ditch the full-size toiletries and embrace travel-sized versions or solid alternatives. Consider refillable containers for shampoo and conditioner or opt for shampoo bars that are TSA-friendly and eliminate the risk of leaks. Remember, most hotels and Airbnb’s provide basic toiletries like shampoo and body wash.
Shoes: comfort and versatility
Shoes are often the bulkiest items in your suitcase. Choose a versatile pair that can be worn for both walking and exploring, as well as dressier occasions. Opt for neutral colours that complement your outfits. Pack a pair of flip-flops for evenings or lounging by the pool.
The “just in case” trap
We’ve all been there – packing for that “just in case” scenario. But most “what ifs” can be solved creatively. A colourful scarf can double as a light jacket in a pinch. Feeling chilly on the plane? Layer with a sweater you’ve already packed. Resist the urge to pack for every possible situation and focus on creating outfits you’ll actually wear.
