Recent rankings have landed two of South Africa’s most popular markets among the top 20, worldwide.
Rankings released by UK-based Merchant Machine recently revealed that South Africa has claimed its global ‘top 20’ ranking for not one but two of its most popular markets – and they’re both in Gauteng.
The Gauteng markets have ranked among the Top 20 in the world, while an additional 12 proudly South African markets ranked among the continent’s Top 20.
The Victoria Yards market located in Johannesburg’s Yeoville clinched its global ranking at number 7.
The market provides job creation through urban agriculture projects, artisan studios, urban farming, visual arts, and skills development. Victoria Yards often hosts artsy workshops, exhibits, First Thursdays, foodie events, live performances, and more.

The Market @ The Sheds in Pretoria claimed its spot as the 15th-best tourist market in the world.

The South African reports that in December 2023, Merchant Machine drew from publicly available review data from Tripadvisor globally, creating a list of the top markets identified as farmers markets, street and flee markets. Only markets with 25 reviews and up were considered for rankings.
Provo Farmers Market in the US’ Utah made the winning rank at number 1 globally. The US also claimed a total of 12 of the Top 20 markets worldwide.
