Johannesburg-born singer Tyla has topped international charts with her hit song, Water, landing on Spotify’s global top 40. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on the weekend, Tyla dedicated the viral track and its success to her fellow South Africans.
According to reports by News24, Tyla’s song, Water, has reached over 40 million streams on the platform, charting at number 40 on Spotify’s most-played.
Tyla joins international artists including Doja Cat, Jung Kook, and Taylor Swift in Spotify’s top 40.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared news of Tyla’s success in the top 40, writing:
“Tyla’s ‘Water’ enters the top 40 on the global Spotify chart for the first time ever with 1.96 million streams (#40).”
Responding to the tweet, Tyla wrote: “This is for South Africa”.

Tyla’s hit song was released in July this year and prompted a TikTok dance challenge, which took SA and the world by storm – translating into thousands of streams of the locally-inspired hit.

Tyla also released the music video for her hit three days ago, which has already garnered over 2M views on YouTube. Watch:
After signing with US record label Epic Records, who have produced music for global artists to the likes of Michael Jackson and Wham, Tyla went on to join Chris Brown for his European tour earlier this year in Paris.
Sharing an Instagram video celebrating her chart on Spotify’s top 40, Tyla says:
