Celebrating Black History Month and 30 years of South African democracy, the U.S. Embassy in South Africa has launched a ‘poetry and creative expression’ video competition titled ‘Next Generation Democracy’.
South African youth aged 18-28 are encouraged to submit a spoken word poetry video clip of no longer than 2 minutes, expressing their views on the promise of democracy for South African youth now and in the next 30 years.
The video should be uploaded to a private YouTube or other shareable platform, and the link must be sent to [email protected] by 11:59 pm on February 25, 2024. English submissions only.
The competition will only be open to South African youth residing in South Africa.
Once the top 18 winners (2 from each province) have been chosen, they will attend a 3-day spoken word poetry workshop with renowned American poet Alysia Harris in mid-March 2024, culminating in a final performance.
The U.S. Embassy will award three top prizes, including a MacBook for first place, an iPad for second place, and an iPad Mini for third place. Winning videos will be showcased on embassy social media accounts, and all finalists will receive certificates.
