Presenter, broadcaster and former Miss South Africa Liesl Laurie and her husband Dr. Musa Mthombeni have escaped South Africa for a break, touring the Big Apple and vlogging their journey online.

On Friday, Liesl Laurie took to TikTok, prompting viewers that “this is not a get ready with me, it’s a get out of the country!”
Liesl and her husband Dr. Musa Mthombeni start the video off excitedly getting ready to leave SA as they show off their comfy airport ‘looks’. Cosy tracksuits and warm sweaters are the name of the game as they head into colder weather in New York, with a layover in France, first.

The couple vlogged their journey to the Big Apple from the airport, where Liesl posted that she obsessively checks her passport to make sure it’s still there, in her bag – there’s no greater panic than thinking, “shucks, where’s my passport!?”
The layover in France was short and expensive according to Dr. Mthombeni, who narrated the couple’s first vlog traveling to New York. He said:
“Started off with a layover in France, and we were humbled by the disgusting stance we find our South African rand in”
“Mentally, we had to prepare ourselves out of converting money, and just have a good time”

After a short layover and a long flight, the couple finally touched down in an overcast New York City, enjoying their first day touring the streets, taking trains, eating NY slices, and shopping.
“We called this our street tour – we were riding subways and doing all kinds of crazy things,” said Dr. Mthombeni.

Day 2 in New York started with a shopping escapade at an outlet mall, where the couple met up with friends and shopped at the likes of Gucci, Prada and Jimmy Choo. According to Mthombeni, the American dollar combined with exorbitant designer prices didn’t lead to any major purchases. He said:
“We didn’t have money for that sort of stuff, so we decided to go and do the real thing – go to The Garden to watch Black Coffee perform live…”
After a day of shopping, the couple visited Madison Square Garden to see fellow South African DJ Black Coffee perform live. The venue was nothing short of spectacular, and so was the show, said the couple:
“What a good time, what a spectacular show by Black Coffee and all the people that he’s been performing with through the years!”
After jamming to Black Coffee’s Drive, the couple stopped off for a midnight bite to eat at Raising Cane’s – one of the many fast-food outlets they have posted ‘taste tests’ from on TikTok.
With full bellies, the Mthombenis signed off their first vlog from The Big Apple, with the promise of more to come.
