As always, this year’s Oscars weren’t shy of tearjerker moments and quick quips. Placed between these highlights, was John Cena, sporting nothing but a pair of Birkenstocks, presenting the award for Best Costume Design. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryan Gosling, who brought the Kenergy in full force…
We’ll start with the entertainment, which the 96th Academy Awards were not short of…
We see you, John Cena
50 years ago, at the 46th Academy Awards, a streaker named Robert Opel interrupted David Niven’s introduction of Elizabeth Taylor at the Oscars by running, butt-naked, on stage.
To mark the anniversary of this world-famous moment, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and wrestler-turned-actor John Cena agreed to put on a rather scant-ish skit. The act unfolded with a naked John Cena, wearing only Birkenstocks, being cajoled on stage by Kimmel to present the award for Best Costume Design.
Viewers joked that Cena’s famous tagline: ‘you can’t see me,’ is now rendered null and void. We’ve seen it all.
Ryan Gosling brought the Kenergy
Ken finally became a 10 at the Oscars, when Ryan Gosling put on a performance of I’m Just Ken, originally performed in the Barbie movie.
The actor surprised the crowd – and by the looks of it, his co-star Margot Robbie, who couldn’t hold back the cackles – with his anticipated Oscars performance. With full force and in neon pink, Gosling delivered. As he always does.
Oh and, Flash – a renowned guitarist – also made an appearance in the number.

Entertainment aside, other Oscars highlights included The Holdovers star Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning her first Oscar, Emma Stone earning her win for her Frankenstein-esque protrayel of Bella Baxter in Yargos Lathimos’ Poor Things. Oh, and Oppenheimer dominating the awards ceremony on multiple fronts.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph cries happy tears
The Holdovers movie, which has already earned a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice award, a BAFTA and a Screen Actors Guild Award, racked in one more as leading actress of the film, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, reeled in her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
In her teary-eyed speech, Randolph recalled the efforts of her mother, who was her early mentor and source of encouragement into the world of theater. She then thanked her former class teacher, who inspired her to forge her own path.
Emily Stone takes Best Actress
Although many expected Lily Gladstone to become the first indigenous woman to win an Oscar for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon, it was Emma Stone who took the award for Best Actress, for her role in director Yargos Lathimos’ film, Poor Things.
Emma, who herself seemed slightly taken aback to receive the award, chalked it up to the brilliance of the entire cast and crew involved with the film. In accepting the award, Stone – crying crocodile tears, with a raspy voice and a broken dress in tow – said:
“It’s not about me, it’s about a team who came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. That is the best part about making movies, it’s all of us together. I am so deeply honoured to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love, and their care, and their brilliance, into the making of this film. ”
Stone shared a special thank you to the film’s director, who placed her in the unforgettable role of Bella Baxter:
“And Yargo, thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter. I am forever thankful for you.”
Oppenheimer dominates the awards, again
Out of 13 nominations at the Academy Awards this year, Oppenheimer clinched a total of 7, with the most notable being Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert Downey Jr.) Then, it won the major award for Best Picture, too.
Being the biggest box office success of the year, the win came as no surprise. Producer Emma Thomas accepted the award, sharing: “I could deny it, but I have been dreaming of this moment for so long but it seemed so unlikely that it would actually happen.”
