Oscar season is just around the corner and there are already several films getting attention from the powers-that-be. Here’s a quick look into which films we’re hoping get the Academy-Award nod…
Carol
Cate Blanchett stars as sophisticated socialite Carol Aird in this heartbreakingly romantic tale about forbidden love in an intolerant era. Set in 1952 in New York, the film follows the complex love story between young photographer Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) and married socialite Carol Aird (Blanchett). A sophisticated take on the radical novel, The Price of Salt.
Bridge of Spies
Tom Hanks may very well receive his third Academy Award for his role in this historical drama based on the notorious U-2 incident of 1960. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this thrilling production follows the tale of lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) when he’s called to negotiate the exchange of two Cold War prisoners – one Soviet spy for one captured American pilot. It’s utterly captivating!
A Walk in the Woods
Robert Redford stars as writer Bill Bryson in this charming comedy based on Bryson’s book by the same name. After living in England for 20 years, Bill moves back to the US, where he takes up the challenge of hiking the Appalachian Trail, to prove to himself he’s not that old – yet. Unexpectedly, his estranged friend, Katz (Nick Nolte), invites himself along.
The Revenant
A dark Western thriller from Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu set in the unexplored American wilderness. The story is based on true events and follows the tale of Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) who looks for revenge after he’s mauled by a bear and his son is ruthlessly killed by his companions. Poor Leo never quite seems to make it, but we’re hoping this film will finally win him that prized gold statue!
