The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted its annual Golden Games for seniors at the Green Point Track in on Wednesday. Hundreds of seniors from surrounding Cape Town areas gathered for a day of Golden Games, also known as Senior Olympics.
The Golden Games aim to empower the elderly and encourage them to stay physically active and healthy.
Almost a hundred seniors from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Woodstock, and Bo-Kaap participated in a variety of events, including relays, egg and spoon races, bowling, netball, and many more.
“Our older residents play an important role in our communities as they bring wisdom, experience, and calm,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross. “They are also one of the vulnerable groups and are often neglected or forgotten.”
“Our senior clubs give them the opportunity to interact socially with their peers and enjoy recreational activities to keep them healthy and alert.”
The highlight of the day was a freestyle dance competition, which brought about much fun and laughter as the seniors cheered each other on.
At 82 years old, Juliana Opperman from Hangberg was the oldest participant on the day, proving that one can maintain a healthy mind and body at any age.
