Christmas is all about never-ending food, good wine, cold beers and lounging around. While life is all about balance and some time for relaxation is definitely well-deserved, it’s no secret that Christmas Day can wreck havoc on our health. Especially when the whole family’s under one roof and you’re not keeping hydrated between those glasses of bubbly.
Here’s 5 quick tips to keep in mind to avoid Christmas burn out:
Curb the family drama
As lovely as Christmas day is, we all know how that some shade of family drama is bound to peak out at one point or another, causing stress and anxiety on the most festive day of the year. While we can’t control the inevitable family bickering, we can practice gratitude for what we have, instead of focusing on what we don’t have, or what we don’t share in common. Instead of fighting, express what you’re most grateful for. Even if it’s your glass of bubbly.
Stay hydrated
Drink your water! Not only does the South African Christmas gets a little warmer here in the southern hemisphere, but keeping hydrated helps your body maintain normal functioning. If you’re planning on a boozy Christmas, make sure to get one glass of water in between drinks. You’ll thank us tomorrow.
Probiotic boost
It’s normal to overindulge over this period. All of this can leave your digestive system needing a little extra care. To help it along for a healthier holiday body invest in a good probiotic if you are not yet taking one. Taking a probiotic each day will give your digestive system the extra support it needs. They work by populating your digestive tract with the good bacteria necessary for proper digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals. In addition, try probiotic drinks like water kefir and kombucha.
We’re all going on a stroll
Instead of going sedentary after Christmas lunch, take the family out for a stroll. Take advantage of the warm weather and get the family moving about in nature. You’ll be moving your body, combating indigestion and improving your mood, and saving yourself from a food hangover.
Reflect before the New Year
Now’s the time for gratitude, family and reflection. Whether you’re more internal about your thoughts, or you like sharing them with loved ones, it’s healthy to express your feelings and energy from the year passed. Yes, it’s been a tough one, but you’ve kept on showing up. What has made you laugh this year, what has made you grow? Now’s generally the period everyone gets their New Years resolutions in order.
We’re here to remind you, you don’t need to set new obstacles for yourself. Goals are great, but if you’re happy with life – enjoy the present moment. Don’t jump too far ahead by planning the future. Take a minute, and have a Merry Christmas.
