AFI Fashion Week 2018 was recently held at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg. Designers showed off their spring/summer collections to an enthusiastic audience of fashion lovers, and we couldn’t get enough!
In the news
The Afro Asia theme marks a firm partnership between AFI and Tokyo Fashion Week, with the aim of encouraging local designers to think outside the box and approach their designs with a global perspective. The good news is, a designer from this year’s Fashion Week Joburg will showcase a stunning collection in Tokyo next year- an opportunity of a lifetime!
The 4 best looks of the night
Matte Nolim
Although designers; Nao Seati, D.O.P.E and Mahone showcased incredible collections, we were simply blown away by local deisgner, Matte Nolim. The standout looks included whimsical dresses and cool suits made from rich, luxurious textiles in the most fabulous pastel hues – ideal for the season.
MaXhosa
TUT students were the first to showcase their key looks, followed by AFI’s Privé, La Art Neviole Emporium, MaXhosa by Laduma, Presidential and 5-Knot from Japan, wowing us all with their retro ranges. MaXhosa’s bold and colourful pieces were an absolute hit and will continue to gain popularity in SA.

Ruff Tung
Another brand which truly stood out on the night was Ruff Tung. Their casual, yet sophisticated designs will suit any body shape, and we just couldn’t take our eyes off their beautiful, botanical prints, which brought the spring/summer feeling right to our doorstep. These pieces make you want to take a trip to an exotic island and sip on a Pina Colada.
To wrap up…
The iconic designer, David Tlale wrapped up African Fashion International Fashion Week Joburg with a dedication to the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Mam’Albertina Sisulu at SkyRink in Carlton Centre. A truly memorable runway moment for all South Africans, and one we’ll never forget.
