SA Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Week unfolded over the weekend, and exuded all the creativity and innovation!
After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, designers were back with a vengeance, showcasing their latest collections. From classic silhouettes to elegant streetwear, our wardrobes are due for an upgrade!
Hosted at the Mall of Africa in Waterfall City in Joburg, organisers chose the perfect backdrop for inspiring designs. Carlton Hair, Cruz Vodka, Mr Price & Oppo were some of the major sponsors of the event, boasting engaging activations, elegant bars, and photo ops for all guests invited.
What we spotted
One of the major trends that drew focus this season is the return of bold prints and colours. Whilst muted tones and minimalism are at the forefront for our winter, designers are embracing bright, eye-catching patterns and hues into their collections for Spring/Summer. From bright reds to electric blues, the runway was awash with gorgeous colours.
Shapes and texture were other common themes in many of the local designer collections. Playing with silhouettes and deconstructed ways of putting together conventional garments.
Tailoring played a huge role in menswear collections. Placing focus on the fit and presentation of garments. The attention to detail was immaculate!
In terms of accessories, this season’s standout trend is statement jewellery.
From chunky to full-blown oversized earrings, designers are embracing bold, statement-making accessories that add an element of drama and flair to their collections.
Another common trend in accessories we saw on the runway this year was the playful element of contrast an accessory can add to an outfit, either in shape or colour.
This year the Mr Price New Talent search was won by Capetonian designer Cyla Gonsolves. She launched her luxury resort and knitwear brand for women in 2017, after being a contestant in the reality series, The Intern by David Tlale.
The award-winning Cyla Gonsolves range includes languid day dresses, cosy knits for effortless layering, and contemporary classic blouses. Each collection is conceived and tailored with impeccable care and attention to detail.
Overall, the Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Week has been a triumph, showcasing the best and brightest of the fashion world.
From beautiful garments to statement accessories, the collections demonstrated a commitment to innovation, creativity, and style that will shape the industry for years to come.
As the world continues to emerge from the pandemic, fashion remains an essential outlet for self-expression and creativity, and this season’s fashion week has certainly delivered on that front.
