Denim guru Donna Ida shares her secrets on buying the perfect pair of jeans.
1. Be open-minded
The magic is in the fit, so get expert advice. Each brand is different, so a good one-on-one session with a sales assistant will help you get the right fit for your shape.
2. Fit starts with the rise
Look at the measurement from the crotch to the top of the waistband at the front. If you like being held tightly into your jeans, the high-rise is for you.

3. Stretch – yes!
It’s all about denim with stretch to flatter. If they go on too easily, go down a size. You should have to wriggle into them and the waistband should be nice and snug – if you can fit two fingers down the back, it’s good; a whole hand is not!
4. Colour it right
A block wash like black, dark denim or a strong-coloured jean can hide a multitude of sins. Bright jeans freshen up your wardrobe, but there’s nothing as flattering as traditional blue denim.
5. What cut is for you?
Think about your natural shape and look for jeans to complement. Skinny jeans are great for most figure types. Apple shape – go for dark-wash denim with lots of stretch for slim legs.
Pear or curvy shapes – A high waist nips in neatly. Not sure what shape you are? Check out Donna Ida’s website for advice.
6. Don’t forget your shoes
Are you wearing jeans for day, evening or work? Do you prefer heels or flats? Black skinny jeans work at all levels, with any height. Always try jeans on with the shoes you prefer, to get the leg length right.
