Suede is an incredibly delicate fabric. Whether it’s your favourite sneakers, a go-to handbag, or even a couch cover, keeping suede in pristine condition and not damaging its texture or colour during cleaning is tricky, but simple if you know these tips and tricks.

1. Start with a suede brush
Invest in a good-quality suede brush. They’re designed to lift dirt and revive the nap (the soft, raised fibers on suede). Brush in one direction gently to remove surface grime. For stubborn spots, try brushing more firmly but avoid scrubbing, as it may damage the material.
2. Grab these from the pantry
For minor stains, a clean, white eraser or a specialised suede eraser works wonders. Rub lightly on the stained area to lift the mark. For oily stains, sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on the spot and leave it overnight to absorb the grease. Brush off the residue the next day.
Alternatively, you could use white vinegar. Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar and gently blot the stained area. Avoid soaking the suede; moisture is its enemy. Allow the material to air-dry completely, then brush it with your suede brush to restore the nap.
3. Never use water!
Water can discolour and warp suede. If your item gets wet, stuff it with tissue paper to maintain its shape and let it air-dry naturally. Once dry, gently brush to restore its texture.
4. Use suede protector to shield from future stains
Apply a suede protector spray to shield against dirt and water. Choose a high-quality, colour-safe spray and follow the instructions for the best results. Regular reapplication ensures long-lasting protection.
