We’re not sure if it’s 2022, or 2002? This year fashion saw itself through a trip down memory lane, drawing from some of the most iconic (and questionable) Y2K style moments of the past. We remember it all like yesterday. From Paris Hilton rocking the iconic ‘stop being desperate‘ clap-back tee and maxi skirt, to Tyra Banks schooling us all in low rise style, and Jennifer Aniston winning best hairdo of Y2K beauty.
Fast forward 20 years later, and we’re seeing the same kind of early-2000s edge pop up everywhere. From the resurrection of the all-denim affair to silk scarves, platform sandals, prominent lip liner and sporty sunnies. Let’s hone in on five of the biggest trends 2023 stole straight from Y2K:
Butterfly clips
Jennifer Aniston will always be the undisputed queen of butterfly clips, though the 90s saw all of our favourite icons including Lohan, the Olsen Twins, Tyra Banks, Brandy and Britney all wear them.
And now they’re back. Go for bold by using a bunch of tiny butterfly clips in a cute up-do style like Jennifer did, or opt for the classic large tortoiseshell clip for a fast and effortless throwback moment.

If you’re looking to embrace the ‘cute’ factor, multicoloured butterfly clips are what you’re looking for. Is that too busy? Then keep your clips to one colour, and use them to enhance your monochrome fit.

Or, take a whole new approach to the butterfly clip entirely, like Olivia did:
The must-have micro top
Is there a celebrity who didn’t rock a cute crop in the ’90s? From tight-fitting, belly-baring micro-crops to halter dreams and every preppy mini-number in between, the crop had its place in Y2K style.
Surprise surprise, we’ve managed to effortlessly translate the micro top of the 2000s back in current fashion, but did it ever really go away?

Kendall is the reigning queen of this category. The supermodel knows how to dress up a crop for any occasion.

The best thing about a micro-crop? Anyone can wear it. Even when you’re this close to popping out a newborn, as Rihanna so effortlessly proves:

The clap-back makes a comeback
As uncouth as it may seem, there’s no denying how well Paris can rock a clap-back tee. Stop being desperate is possibly the most fitting item of clothing we’ve ever seen Paris rock.?
Made popular in the 90s, clap-back tees lay somewhere in between making a statement and dressing for leisure. One of the most iconic clap-backs will always be Britney’s ‘dump him’ number, which she sported in London, in 2001.
What better way to get a point across, no?

The low riser
Who can forget, the era of the low-rise? Even though opinions on this one have always been divided, the low-rise trend has managed to find its way back into ’22’s fashion diaries.
The baton has been passed down, straight from the hips of Hilton, Aguilera and Banks onto the likes of Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, and Dove Cameron.

Is there another chance for the low-rise era to find new life? It seems so, along with another trend which has reared its all-denim head. We know, we know, you’re already getting flashback’s from Justin and Britney’s denim extravaganza from MTV’s 2001 AMA’s. If you’re not, well, here:
Denim dreams
Luckily, we’ve seen this trend translate into new realms, which are slightly less…patchy? Dua Lipa knows how to rock a skintight denim number in style.
