Each new January never fails to share a different take on ‘new year, new me’. And, for many this extends to their food philosophies as well.
If you always wanted to try a vegan eating method, but have been afraid to simply make the switch and commit to the all-encompassing lifestyle that comes with it, ‘Veganuary’ might just be your answer.
What is Veganuary?
Veganuary is a UK-based non-profit organisation that encourages people to try out a vegan diet for the month of January – and hopefully beyond. The movement was first created to promote and educate about a vegan lifestyle. Veganuary then, is a novel way of getting even the fiercest meat-eaters to try something different and educating people on how delicious and nutritious a vegan diet can be, as well as how environmentally impactful it is.
The Veganism organisation’s aim is to encourage people, restaurants and businesses to incorporate more whole fruits and vegetables into their diets through plant-based foodie options.
Veganuary in South Africa
In South Africa, Veganuary is a quirky and trending concept. Many people are taking up the challenge by opting to take on a vegan lifestyle for the month of January.
The influence of an ongoing Veganuary movement is causing more and more brands, restaurants and supermarkets to promote the campaign by launching new vegan products and menus.

Do you have ‘Veganworry’?
If you have concerns about consuming a vegan diet, even for a limited amount of time because you are afraid of not getting all the nutrients from the other excluded food groups—you have nothing to worry about.
This eating method can be perfectly managed as it includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds that contain protein.
Healthy vegan diets are saturated with vitamins B1, C, and E, folic acid, magnesium, and iron. Because of this, they can also be low in cholesterol and saturated fats.
If not followed correctly, it could result in some health problems.
Be mindful about what you are eating and if Veganuary is a breeze for you, you can incorporate it more into your diet for good!
